Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences

News from near and far

December is going to be a fun month. I hope everyone recovered from their turkey (I cooked my first one!) and ready for the next assault on the waistline.

With all that lies ahead in 2013 my husband and I are on a new regime of healthy eating and exercise, and I highly recommend it for keeping the creative juices flowing. I’m currently finishing off the first round of edits of Harbinger, and as always my wonderful editor at Ace, Danielle Stockley has done a bang up job of pointing out the weaknesses of the story.

That’s the funny thing about editors, they usually end up telling you things you already knew in the back of your mind. The nice bit is they usually give you suggestions how to get around that blockage. I think Harbinger is going to nicely tie up loose ends for Sorcha, Merrick and Raed. I don’t think I am doing spoilers by saying Danielle might have teared up at the ending…

Harbinger has no cover yet, but does have a release date of July 30th 2013 over on Amazon.

However there is more Sorcha news sooner than that. First the Science Fiction Book Club now has the order page up and running for the hardcover Omnibus edition of the first three books. It’s called the Order of Deacons. I haven’t got a really good quality version of the cover image, but what I can see I approve. It apparently was not done by Jason Chan, but the artist has done a great job of capturing Sorcha, Merrick and the Rossin in all their glory. I can’t wait for January when the hardback arrive.

You can pre-order from here—but you have to be a member. (I really enjoy my membership!)

In more news from the Order, the German edition of Geist is now also available for pre-order. Interestingly the German publisher decided not to go with the American title, and instead it is called Der verfluchte Prinz (The Cursed Prince) which I am totally fine with. The series is also called something different Die Runen der Macht (The Runes of Power). And then there is the cover. Personally, I nearly always love the German covers. There is something of a different sensibility to them, and luckily this is one of those times when I was blown away.

The hair colour is darker than in the American version, but that really doesn’t bother me, because of the totally Sorcha attitude on display. The little details, the background, and the sense of movement and purpose in it, very much captures my heroine.

You can pre-order Der verfluchte Prinz from here

And in December the Janus Affair comes out in Germany.

And finally, the anthology I have a novella in is available for pre-order on Amazon. Clockwork Fairytales: A Collection of Steampunk Fables should be out in June.

Phew! Looks like 2013 is going to be as busy as 2012—if not more so. So what do you think of the covers?

Deadlines and appearances

Time for an update from me!

Well, the deadline for Harbinger is drawing in, and it is hard to let go of these Deacons, Pretenders and geists that I have spent the last five years visiting with. I am pulling all the threads together and deciding their fate…

On the happy side, I’ve had word that the German version of Geist will be coming in the summer of 2013—which makes me wonder what the title will be. Since Phoenix Rising came out in Russia and Germany, I’ve begun to crave as many foreign versions as possible!

Our next appearance after that will be at DragonCon!

For now back to the writing!

Pondering and collaboration

As the days fly by and the arrival of the Janus Affair: A Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences novel becomes very, very imminent, I am contemplating how I got here, and just how damn lucky I am.

All this pondering could also have something to do with marrying my co-writer (again) in front of our parents and loved ones, or even getting confirmation this week that my greencard is winging its way towards me. All of these things are collaborations with Tee, and ones I never really saw coming.

But that is true of the best and the worst things in life.

The whole Ministry series was—if you haven’t heard the story yet—a complete set of staggering coincidences and good fortune. The series was originally going to be a podcast for pay. It then evolved into a novel, and got turned into a podcast anthology. Yep, that original podcast never actually happened, but we did eventually get it out to the podcast world in some form.

Even stranger was, the Ministry won a steampunk award, got into the top 10 science fiction books of 2011, was turned into an audio book, and got translated into Russian and German. Through all this, I can’t help but marvel at how the smallest, inconsequential conversation with Tee on a plane trip from Las Vegas to Washington DC became this thing.

I am proud of the Ministry books. I think they are fun, and Eliza and Wellington make me laugh and smile. Tee and I genuinely enjoy writing them, and it has been a joy to have someone to hold my hand, bounce ideas off and relish the successes of the ride. I could never have done this without Tee Morris, and I am forever grateful he took the leap into the creative soup with me.

So, I hope you’ll check out the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences website, download the podcast anthology or the digital editions of the short stories, and of course…naturally…pre-order the book. I have no idea where the series might evolve to next, but that’s fine. I am content to hold onto Eliza’s petticoats and see where the mad adventure takes us.

Oh and it you are curious, yes…this is a picture of how Tee and I collaborate together. We’ve never revealed this to anyone before, but I thought it was about time….

The Janus Affair Cover

It’s been a time for cover revelations, and here’s another one.

The adventures of Eliza and Wellington continue in the Janus Affair, coming in late May this year.

Evildoers beware! Retribution is at hand, thanks to Britain’s Best-kept secret agents!

Certainly no strangers to peculiar occurrences, agents Wellington Books and Eliza Braun are nonetheless stunned to observe a fellow passenger aboard Britain’s latest hyper steam train suddenly vanish in a dazzling bolt of lightning. They soon discover this is not the only such disappearance…with each case going inexplicably unexamined by the Crown.

The fate of England is once again in the hands of an ingenious archivist paired with a beautiful, fearless lady of adventure. And though their foe be fiendishly clever, so then is Mr. Books…and Miss Braun still has a number of useful and unusual devices hidden beneath her petticoats.

I love this cover because it conveys the adventure and energy of the book. Eliza looks hell bent for leather on adventure, while the joke of Wellington’s face remaining concealed continues.

Christmas with the Ministry

It’s a busy time of year for everyone, and the run up to the final days before Christmas are crazy. So I’m ever so pleased that Harper Voyager picked Phoenix Rising as one of ten books that they are discounting for a limited time to 99c.

And best of all this is a cross platform promotion. The book is available in all formats at 99c. Yep, it’s a Penny Dreadful…at least for a time.

This book has done wonderful things…more than we could have ever expected; won the Airship Award for best written work, and got into the finals for top Science Fiction novel of 2011 on Goodreads.com. So please buy, enjoy and spread the word. This is a great deal, a great way to introduce people to steampunk, and a great way to prepare for the arrival of the Janus Affair which is coming in late May 2012.

The Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences will be finishing up the Tales from the Archives, and dropping a Christmas episode before the end of the year. In 2012 we’ll be releasing a new book trailer for the Janus Affair…and what we have and who we have helping us make this happen is super exciting. So hold onto that bowler—next year is going to be a big one!
